What do I include in a sketchbook?
I recently got the news that I was placed into AP art at my school as a junior, when it%26#039;s a senior course. I mostly focus on landscape paintings and I%26#039;ve never really kept a sketchbook before. Now that it%26#039;s required as summer work, I have no idea where to start.
I enjoy anything with political underlays if that helps at all, but other than that, I%26#039;m completely lost. I have the book, but all I%26#039;ve been able to do so far is pick it up and flip through the empty pages. Does anyone have any tips?
What do I include in a sketchbook?
The best tip I can give you is to just pick that thing up and DO something it it. Doodle, sketch...doesn%26#039;t have to be perfect, just has to show your thought process. It%26#039;s always interesting to see an aritsts thought process, I think. Go ahead, don%26#039;t be afraid of it. Look at it as a chance to build your creative strength. Before you know it, you%26#039;ll have twenty of those things lying around, full of great ideas. I started my first sketchbook in 9th grade and now have about 7 or 8 them in different stages of completion. So go out and create and enjoy!

For some ideas on this search google for Altered Books and look at some of the results.
Next you can divide your sketch books into sections. (Still Life, Landscapes, Animals, People, Modern/Abstract)

-Draw an even number of drawings for each, because it shows control, and although you may prefer one type of art over another it is good to show that you can do alot.
-You may say to yourself or even allowed that you are horrible at any of the mentioned types of art, well you should still draw them no matter how horrible they turn out.

-As you sketch or create in each section you can try to fix things and make progress. Change the way you are looking at an object, improve shading, do all in your power to improve everything, everything can because a step better.

How to change a black and white photograph to color??
I recently was married, and after receiving our wedding photographs, over half of them were in black and white! I asked our photographer for a select few in color, and she said she couldnt! What should I do? I can%26#039;t ask for my money back, because she is a new wedding photgrapher and offered to do our wedding for free. I%26#039;m very grateful and the pictures are wonderful, I would just prefer a few in color! Plead help! Thank you!

With the advent of digital cameras, many people are calling themselves %26quot;wedding%26quot; photographers who have never been in a photo class, worked with a wedding photographer or even know that shooting using the black and white feature on there camera is irreversible. When a pro wants or needs a black and white print, the either shoot using black and white film or convert colour image files into a new RGB, desaturated and adjusted file, naming it something else so they do not overwrite the original file.
There are some old timers out there who used to hand colour black and white prints back when colour film was not used by portrait photographers. Check with one of your local pro labs and they should be able to hook you up to a colourists.
Reply:I totally agree with fhotoace. However, that being said if you got any sort of good photographer, they should have captured the picture in color first and then converted to black in white. I shoot sometimes with black and white film, but by no means will that be a majority of the photos. I just shoot with black and white because I love the process of developing.
However, most likely the photographer just doesn%26#039;t want to give you them in color. One because it causes them to use more time to give you more photos, and two there might be a reason they put it in color. Sometimes you can hide mistaken shots and disguise them in black and white (ooops just told a secret). That is just the benefits of Photoshop.
Lastly, if you are serious and you want it back into color, and the photo was shot in black and white, the only way to color it is by using a technique called tinting. This is the old form that early 1900%26#039;s and 1800%26#039;s did to color their photos by hand. However now you can use photoshop, and select a color to add over the black and white image. It isn%26#039;t going to look like the original color photos, but it will give you suttle colors that can offer great effects.

You could also send the file to a professional photoshopper. They could add the right colors. Expect to pay $50-$100/hr for the service.
My guess by looking at your sample picture is that your photographer made terrible white balance errors because of the mixture of shade and sunlight. She probably converted them to b%26amp;w to hide her embarrassing error.
If she had shot everything in RAW like a real pro does you would not be in this mess!

I see that the white balance was left on auto. This might not be a bad thing, but it surprises me to see that along with the use of manual exposure settings.
I could swear I%26#039;m seeing some pink in the dress. I think she just screwed up the job and is trying to salvage what she can by printing in black and white.
Beg and plead to get the original files and see if you can get a Photoshop professional to make something of it for you.

It%26#039;s the least she can do for having used your wedding as her training ground....and it might encourage her to do a better job with the setting/backdrop next time.

The grayscale option on digital cameras is completely useles and redundant, since any color photograph can be changed to grayscale later. Problem is, if the original is in grayscale you have 0 options.

Once you know how much you want to scale, put that measurement in your print dialog and look for the option to %26#039;tile%26#039; print. What it should do is print part of the image on each sheet which you can stick together (tape/glue/spray mount on the back is the best way to hide the join).
In some software it may even give you the choice of how much to overlap the sheets by. This is a technique that graphic designers used for years before A3, A2 and upwards printers became affordable (they%26#039;d print a proof %26#039;tiled%26#039; from an 4 printer and then mock it up from the separate pieces).
Quick size calculation tip - If you%26#039;re working in European standard paper sizes (A4, A3 etc), going up 2 sizes (say, A4 to A2) is 200%, going up one size (A4 to A3) is 141%. In size reductions it%26#039;s just the opposite - down 2 sizes is 50%, down one size is 70%. Not sure about US sizes (letter, legal etc).

How to overexpose a backgound?
I don%26#039;t know much about photography but I love to play around with it. I really want to get some shots of small trinkets isolated on just a blank white background. I was going to try using white paper behind the objects, but internet searches tell me the camera will try to add color/shades to the white. What do I adjust on my camera (i%26#039;m using a canon eos rebel) to overexpose the background and get that great shot? I%26#039;m not a professional so I don%26#039;t have any fancy lighting equipment either, but would more light help? Like maybe backlighting from behind the white paper background? Any tips would be great! :)
How to overexpose a backgound?
You can use inexpensive construction lamps (under $30) to put about two to three stops more light on your background. When shooting table tops, you may find using a handheld light meter helpful with setting up your shots.
This is a time when you may want to use incandescent lamps for all your %26quot;table top%26quot; shooting and forget about using the flash on your camera.
Until you can afford a three light kit (around $500 for the lamps, stands, umbrellas, background stands, etc), you can use the construction lamps to provide plenty of light.
How to overexpose a backgound?
Put a light on the background from the cameras side. Make that light brighter than the subjects light.
Expose for the subject. Zoom in on it and take a reading, write it down. Back up and put the cam on M. Plug in those settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) and snap a picture. Look at the pic in the LCD, hit the Disp. button until you get a histogram. If the background flashes at you then its overexposed. If not, then you need to change the shutter speed or aperture.

Reply:Here%26#039;s another take on your question. When you are shooting a scene that is predominately white (white background, snow, bridal dress, etc) your camera meter is actually set to meter gray, unless you spot meter a gray card or something else in the scene that is a midtone. So when it sees a lot of white, it actually meters it for gray, hence you need to overexpose it to get the white to be white. Otherwise, it will be very pale and grayish instead. That%26#039;s most likely what your internet searches are telling you.
There are a few ways to overexpose.
1) Add more light by slowing down your shutter speed. If you are on a tripod and your subject is static, this is the way to do it, as you can have a large depth of field.
2) Add more light by opening up the aperture. You lose depth of field using this method, but sometimes you can%26#039;t slow down your shutter speed without introducing motion blur.
3) Combination of both 1 and 2. You can open up the aperture and slow down the shutter speed to add more light to the scene.
4) Keep the same aperture and shutter speed, but increase the ISO. Usually this isn%26#039;t as good, since higher ISOs usually means more noise. But when your shutter speed is at it%26#039;s slowest and aperture as it%26#039;s widest and you still aren%26#039;t overexposed, this is what you%26#039;ve got to do, other than adding more light to the scene.

Expose for the subject. Zoom in on it and take a reading, write it down. Back up and put the cam on M. Plug in those settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) and snap a picture. Look at the pic in the LCD, hit the Disp. button until you get a histogram. If the background flashes at you then its overexposed. If not, then you need to change the shutter speed or aperture.

When you are shooting a scene that is predominately white (white background, snow, bridal dress, etc) your camera meter is actually set to meter gray, unless you spot meter a gray card or something else in the scene that is a midtone. So when it sees a lot of white, it actually meters it for gray, hence you need to overexpose it to get the white to be white. Otherwise, it will be very pale and grayish instead. That%26#039;s most likely what your internet searches are telling you.
There are a few ways to overexpose.
1) Add more light by slowing down your shutter speed. If you are on a tripod and your subject is static, this is the way to do it, as you can have a large depth of field.
2) Add more light by opening up the aperture. You lose depth of field using this method, but sometimes you can%26#039;t slow down your shutter speed without introducing motion blur.
3) Combination of both 1 and 2. You can open up the aperture and slow down the shutter speed to add more light to the scene.
4) Keep the same aperture and shutter speed, but increase the ISO. Usually this isn%26#039;t as good, since higher ISOs usually means more noise. But when your shutter speed is at it%26#039;s slowest and aperture as it%26#039;s widest and you still aren%26#039;t overexposed, this is what you%26#039;ve got to do, other than adding more light to the scene.

How can i print an image over many sheets of paper with photoshop?
Also: if Photoshop doesn%26#039;t give you the option to tile the output, you could try saving the image in a common format such as JPEG or TIFF and placing the image into another program (Word, OpenOffice Writer, Indesign, Quark or similar) which will probably give you more print options - hope that helps.

Well, I%26#039;m not entirely sure of what you%26#039;re asking, but it you just wax the very bottom of the edge, you can glaze the entire piece with a non runny glaze. Just as long as you leave that edge, the lip of the lid, the part that will be touching the kiln (preferably some stilts) than it should be fine. Make sure you know your glazes, though.
If you%26#039;re talking about glazing the rim of the lid, think of it this way: some part of the pot needs to not have glaze on it so that it can touch the kiln and not fuse to it.

At what temp. will this be fired to? If you are using low fire clay in a low fire kiln firing you can fire the lid and pot seperately by stilting the lid using little metal pronged kiln stilts on the inside of the lid so you can glaze it on all sides. Stilting only works for lower fired work because higher firing claybodies tend to warp a bit in the high fire so the lid might warp a bit around the stilt.
You will have to take a silicon carbide grinding stone to remove the little mars the stilt makes on the underside on the lid but that is very easy tho you will likely always see where the stilt prongs sat. Also when you make the ware you need to accomadate the added width the glaze will give the glazed lid rim and glazed pot rim to get a good fitting lid.

Essentially, a stilt is a set, usually 3, of sharp points that is designed to be fired in a kiln. The sharp points will leave small marks, but 1) they will be on the inside of the lid and 2) they%26#039;re pretty small marks.

Yours are fine for the photo album, but just like thousands of other flower pictures, nothing unique or different from the masses. It is hard to make a flower image with much character. For one thing, all of yours are dead center, and taken looking straight down on the bloom. Next time, lay on the ground and shoot up. Shoot from the side and get a bloom profile. Put a colored paper behind the flower to change the look. Shoot a petal with the sun shining through as backlight. Anything to vary the ho-humness will make your images stand out from the rest of the novice flower-shooting pack.
If you are interested in photography, you could start learning the technical and artistic basics. Take a class, or get a book on beginning photography. Learn and practice and you will see your images get better as your skill improves. Best wishes.

The first flower w/ the long pedals was a little underexposed, and that shot of a bunch of yellow ones clustered had the highlights a little blown out but thats OK the duck was too high up, get to its perspective or else it diminishes it. One of my favorites would be the house one %26#039;cause of the angle.

Golden Yellow

Sienna
Vermilion(Red mixed with orange)
Not sure about Indigo, though...

If the highlights are that badly blown out there is simply no information there to recover. Photoshop won%26#039;t help.

Reply:I hope you were not the sole wedding photographer. I doubt that photoshop will save you from your bleached out images or the brides punches.
Reply:I don%26#039;t know if Photoshop will completely save the photos, but you can alter the contrast and whatnot to get it where you want. It might be possible that the backround in the pictures will be darker than you want it to be, but just play around with it. There are all sorts of lighting, color, contrast, and many other adjustments that photoshop lets you do to fix all different types of problems.
In the future, though, here are some things that might help:
If you%26#039;re in a well-lit area, especially outside in the sun, you don%26#039;t need flash.
If you use a digital camera, there are all different settings according to what you%26#039;re shooting. Use the outdoor/daytime setting, or something of the like.
If you use a 35mm (I have a minolta), you%26#039;re going to want to see if you can find a light diffusing lens. I use this outside, especially when I%26#039;m taking pictures in the sun near water. It greatly diffuses glare from the sun. For example, say I were taking a picture of a white sailboat on a lake on a sunny day. Without the light diffusing lens, the white of the boat, and the glare of the sun on the lake would just create one big white blur in the picture. With the light diffusing lens, it greatly tones down the glare, still showing the light hitting the water and the boat, but not creating a white-out.
If you use the disposable 35mm cameras, well, there%26#039;s not much you can do there. A lot of them just have automatic flash that you%26#039;re stuck with - the camera turns on, so does the flash. Your best bet is to just have them developed and tweek them in photoshop.

Reply:This question should be referenced every time someone asks how much they should charge for shooting their first wedding. Note, I am not picking on you, hopefully you weren%26#039;t the event photographer.
You need to post a couple on Flickr or somewhere so we can see what and how bad the problem is. If the highlights are blown, there is no way to recover them, but if the files are RAW that *might* help a bit.
Good luck, I hope at least some are salvageable.

I sincerely hope you were not the primary shooter at the wedding. If you were, you are going to have one angry bride and you may even have the honor of participating in the legal system if she sues you. Last year, a bride in New York sued her florist because the flowers weren%26#039;t an exact match for the ones in the catalog.

If the highlights are that badly blown out there is simply no information there to recover. Photoshop won%26#039;t help.

Reply:I hope you were not the sole wedding photographer. I doubt that photoshop will save you from your bleached out images or the brides punches.
Reply:I don%26#039;t know if Photoshop will completely save the photos, but you can alter the contrast and whatnot to get it where you want. It might be possible that the backround in the pictures will be darker than you want it to be, but just play around with it. There are all sorts of lighting, color, contrast, and many other adjustments that photoshop lets you do to fix all different types of problems.
In the future, though, here are some things that might help:
If you%26#039;re in a well-lit area, especially outside in the sun, you don%26#039;t need flash.
If you use a digital camera, there are all different settings according to what you%26#039;re shooting. Use the outdoor/daytime setting, or something of the like.
If you use a 35mm (I have a minolta), you%26#039;re going to want to see if you can find a light diffusing lens. I use this outside, especially when I%26#039;m taking pictures in the sun near water. It greatly diffuses glare from the sun. For example, say I were taking a picture of a white sailboat on a lake on a sunny day. Without the light diffusing lens, the white of the boat, and the glare of the sun on the lake would just create one big white blur in the picture. With the light diffusing lens, it greatly tones down the glare, still showing the light hitting the water and the boat, but not creating a white-out.
If you use the disposable 35mm cameras, well, there%26#039;s not much you can do there. A lot of them just have automatic flash that you%26#039;re stuck with - the camera turns on, so does the flash. Your best bet is to just have them developed and tweek them in photoshop.

Reply:This question should be referenced every time someone asks how much they should charge for shooting their first wedding. Note, I am not picking on you, hopefully you weren%26#039;t the event photographer.
You need to post a couple on Flickr or somewhere so we can see what and how bad the problem is. If the highlights are blown, there is no way to recover them, but if the files are RAW that *might* help a bit.
Good luck, I hope at least some are salvageable.

If you were, you are going to have one angry bride and you may even have the honor of participating in the legal system if she sues you. I think you have the concept pretty much down but need more practice as well as your friend.
The 1st photo is very nice...I like the color contrast and like her look.
You need to guide your model to pose certain ways to fit the background.

As for a photographer, anyone can become a photographer becasue afterall, you just have to take pictures to be one. Now a good photographer might be the question. Photographer: you%26#039;ve got the general idea down. Picture #3 is my favorite. Effects are good, lighting is nice, composition is good with the model in the center, green grass on the left, and tree on the right. Not too busy, looks good. Pictures 1 and 3 are not bad, but except for when doing a headshot you should try to keep her entire body in the shot, instead of cutting off feet (etc). I think this small detail would bring the shots from good to great (i like the coloring you%26#039;ve done with them, tho). Try it and see what you think. For picture 2, all you need to do is get her whole body, and watch the lighting. Maybe try a different time of day when you can put the sun behind you so it doesn%26#039;t over expose the background. When you can afford it, I would also suggest upgrading to a camera with higher megapixels, so you can catch details better and create clearer, sharper photos.
Model: you are intriguing and have a unique look, but a few small adjustments would do wonders. wardrobe and facial angle! Pic 1 is good, outfit is spunky and unique, body language nice, but try chin up a touch more, and looking at the camera in that shot would give it more energy. Pic 2 - shoulders back, eyes on camera, and no jacket over the dress- the picture shows a nice sunny day! Pic 3 - great. outfit (the jacket seems to work fine when your sitting), pose, eyes, head angle, all good. Pic 4 - almost there. Cute expression, but chin up a little more. And again i%26#039;m not liking the jacket. Fine for everyday, but not for a professional photo. The jacket covers up too much of your body and makes you look larger than you are, and hides the womanly hour-glass curves people like to see on models. When its a shot with you standing, try a jacket thats shorter and more form-fitting, or go with just the dress. In general, try playing around with your makeup too.
Both: keep it up and you%26#039;ll get there! Just practice practice practice! I have some photos that I created in Photoshop using pictures of a male model and female model. Both are nude. No breasts or genitals are visible, just arms, legs, and faces. However, they are in a somewhat comprimising position.
Would a photo place develop these for me, or would they still be too explicit?

I want to fix a warped painting?
If it was done on a stretched canvas, one of your stretcher bars may have warped. I would think that just by popping it into a frame would tame the warp.
If it was done on a gallery-wrap canvas you could always staple (or use 1/2%26quot; screws) a piece of masonite(hardboard) to the back of it. This will force it to flatten itself out.
If you%26#039;re just noticing a small buckle within the canvas material itself, just try spraying (use a plant mister) a little water on the back of the canvas. Just a bit, don%26#039;t soak the thing! That will tighten the canvas and remove any wrinkles.
Lastly, if the painting was done on a board, you can cradle the board. Example of what it would look like by clicking the following link: http://www.dick-blick.com/items/149/25/1...
Hardwood panels are awesome and can be purchased from any Home depot/Lowes type stores and cradeled before painting begins to assure a warp-free piece.

Art has a road of possibilities. You can do graphic design, as today, it is much omre successful than a fine arts job and you can find more work in it. A graphic designer can make invitations, resturant menus, posters, can work in adverstising for a magazine, create the images and covers of magazines, they can work with web developers and create designs digitally on web sites, you can work in printing, you can also be an illustrator, a political cartoonist, a comic artist, a book illustrator, the roads are endless. Unfortunantly, the road for fine arts (painting on canvas) isnt as popular as it was in the past, hence, it is sooo much more harder to find work in the area. Read into graphic designs. You also can make logo;s for companies, etc. Im not sure which uni%26#039;s there are in the UK, bcause i live in Australia, but look on a UK website and see what you can find. Good luck.

Unfortunantly, the road for fine arts (painting on canvas) isnt as popular as it was in the past, hence, it is sooo much more harder to find work in the area. Read into graphic designs. If you lookat it normal, it could look like a woman%26#039;s breasts and a tiny waist, or sometimes it looks like puckered lips. Studio lights and Boken help?
I have a 650 W/S alien Bees light fitted with a brolly box, and 2 100 W/S flash bulbs fitted with umbrellas one shoot through and one silver reflective. Ok I think I know my problem but just want some other suggestions. I want a blured background in my shots but with my lights I am having trouble shooting at 2.8 and shutter 1/200( highest sync speed for my camera). It is still too bright even with my lights at the lowest output. I tried one light, 2 lights and all three varring my setup but I cannot get the results I want. The conclusions I came to was that I need a larger background and need to have my subject further from the background and my camera at like f/11 and 1/125 iso 100. Is there another way to get the boken I want?

10 points for watermarking all over the image instead of just at the bottom, which is safer but makes the image not as good to look at. Quite a subtle watermark though being black.

I have removed the middle one. It took less than 10 minutes. I thought I downloaded the bigger version, but evidently I got the small version. I am not too good at Photoshop, so I can still tell where it was. I didn%26#039;t have time to do a lot with it, so I only removed the middle one. (We have a ball game tonight!) I will remove it from Flickr when I see you have seen it.

Remove the watermark and repost it somewhere I can see it like flickr.
I havent digimarked or embeded a watermark in it. Its 300kb or so if you take the large copy to play with. I know its not a lot to work with but thats about as big as I like to put on the web.
I have seen people answer (people i respect), that its easy to remove watermarks - esp if not embeded. So teach me, show me please.

10 points for watermarking all over the image instead of just at the bottom, which is safer but makes the image not as good to look at. Quite a subtle watermark though being black.
It%26#039;d be a very easy crop job if you%26#039;d watermarked at the bottom, and a faster repair if you%26#039;d only watermarked once... you didn%26#039;t = 20 points.
Ant, I%26#039;ll spend 3-5 minutes on it (max) and send you the result by e-mail, so you can Flickr it afterwards if you like... cool? I won%26#039;t spend the time to make it perfect though... you%26#039;re not paying! : )

OK it took no more than 3 minutes Ant - I used the Healing brush, mostly because I didn%26#039;t want to spend much time on it - isn%26#039;t that slack of me? It%26#039;s on its way by e-mail.
BTW you need to embed your copyright metadata too - even more important... look after your children or they may become orphans and get taken away by big bad corporations who%26#039;ll do nasty things to them - the bast*rds! : )

I have removed the middle one. It took less than 10 minutes. I thought I downloaded the bigger version, but evidently I got the small version. I am not too good at Photoshop, so I can still tell where it was. I didn%26#039;t have time to do a lot with it, so I only removed the middle one. (We have a ball game tonight!) I will remove it from Flickr when I see you have seen it.
